I can only blame my brother for this purchase as it was he who justified that if I was going to be riding the road I would need a road bike with some lever shifters and that the down tubes on my classic Italian steed just wouldn’t cut it. Right or wrong it was a great excuse to start searching for the next bike. Funny how sometimes all it takes is a simple comment to self-justify and allow us to go well beyond the level of road bike we deserve!
This was the result of that yearlong search. This is the same frame that Cadel Evans raced in 2011 to win the Tour. Unfortunately, I don’t climb like Cadel, I don’t weigh like Cadel, and fortunately I don’t sound like Cadel. But every time I get on this thing I feel like I need to ride like Cadel. Is that what made me buy it? On the contrary it was the one thing keeping me from totally committing to it, because I knew I would look like a wannabe doo-bag. However once I saw it with its, stealth style angular tubing, uniquely bracketed main tri, and simple kick-ass classic dual red on black rally striping. I said F it, it’s mine.

It’s equipped semi-modestly with Sram Force group set and a lever upgrade to Sram Red. Wheels are Mavic Ksyrium Elite S. Specialized Romin saddle, and FSA Wing pro compact bars, and OS-99 Stem, Look Keo 2 max pedals.
This bike features BMC’s top level grade carbon that was available at the time, so it is one of their lightest and strongest and man does it ever accelerate. It even allows my fat ass to keep up with the quick accelerations -and I am about as quick as molasses in December. It even gives me a fighting chance on hills during the Sunday am rides- as long as I haven’t eaten a whole pizza on Saturday night. I think it is the closest thing to pure flight as I can think of. Funny thing is that when I bought the bike I really wondered if I deserved such a fine machine. But the way it makes me want to ride hard every time I’m on it, I wonder why I ever even questioned the thought. I remember what I told myself as my hands twitched like an addict with the DT’s, as prepared to drop the coin and completed the purchase… “Buy it-then ride it like you stole it!”
